“Guard Your Minds Very Diligently”
Proverbs 23:7a. For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
The knowledge of oneself is one of the most noble and excellent realizations we can have in our lives. He who knows himself positions himself honestly and impartial in his dealings and doings. The thoughts of an individual’s heart give the evidence of what their life is really all about. We can say we’re Christians, read God's Word, show up at Church for the message, and sing worship songs and even pray, and yet be distant from God by a shallow or surface relationship with Him.
-
A man is as his thoughts.
-
A man has control over his own thoughts.
-
God helps him in the exercise of that control.
-
What we are inwardly determines who we are both to God and to man (Matthew Henry).
Every thought is a seed sown into our mind that takes root whether good or bad they will produce its own fruitage of opportunity or circumstances. Wholesome thoughts produce good fruit and evil or bad thoughts produces evil or bad fruit, each seed produces after its own kind.
Circumstances do not make us who we are, but they reveal to us who we are. We do not attract that which we want, but that we are. Remember, when we are being tempted, we cannot say, "God is tempting me." God is never tempted to do wrong, and neither does He tempt anyone else. We are products of our own thoughts and decisions. God has given us the right to choose and He will not take over our wills.
James 1:12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him. 1:13 When tempted, no one should say, “God” is tempting me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone. 1:14 But everyone is tempted when by his or her own immoral desires (thoughts) and he is lured away and enticed.
